NuReport
Report generation and data form management:
Reporting - Form management - Form design - Printer security
Binary Star offers a wide range of reporting, form printing and form design solutions, ranging from "quick-and-dirty" reporting, to sophisticated laser form and document printing, using the powerful Nucleus engine. Whatever your data form printing or reporting needs, high-performance information delivery systems from Binary Star offer rapidly deployable, easily manageable, secure solutions.
Professional style reports in minutes:
NuReport enables the creation of professional-style reports within minutes. While many reporting tools are limited to simple data formatting and a few aggregate functions, the NuForm Reporter has over 80 built-in functions as well as extensive "rule-set" support, selection criteria, trigger events and controls. NuReport enables the sorting, grouping and aggregation of data, as totals, sub totals and grand-totals according to user-selected criteria, in an easily managed yet secure environment.
Custom forms, created with NuForm or MvFormGen, can be printed in offices anywhere in the world via the Internet, not only saving weeks of lead-time at the printer, but also saving on custom printing. Running out of forms becomes a thing of the past, as the only requirement beyond a laser printer is inexpensive, plain white paper.
Presentation Quality:
Programmers and end users can generate reports as simply as defining an ACCESS statement. Reports created with NuReport are "presentation quality" and can be either columnar or positional (where fields are printed at specified locations). NuReport provides the ability to specify where and how data will be printed on forms or reports. NuReport lends itself to the creation of job streams for invoicing, purchase order "runs" or other forms, and will handle both single page and multi-page processes.
With NuReport, multi-page reports with aggregate break totals, subtotals and grand totals can be quickly created using easily understood notation, in which the "fields" that will be printed are named, the sort order specified and the selection criteria designated. Headings and page footings are easily incorporated with page totals for audit or summary purposes. Font and character size is easily specified.
Data Forms - Invoices, purchase orders, bills of lading
Typeset quality printed materials can be produced from within your existing applications. Users can create electronic forms that can be overlaid by data from in-house and third party applications. Bar codes can be printed (or incorporated within a document). Length and thickness of bars can be varied and landscape or portrait formats chosen, irrespective of the orientation of other text printed on a page. All your printed documents can now look like they came from a professional printer, improving readability as well as enhancing your corporate image. External, PC based applications are not required.
Standards:
NuReport and the NuQL interface enable both programmers and end users to access, update and report on corporate data using an intuitive, natural-word interface. The NuQL query manager allows a wide range of industry standard interfaces including Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) to utilize Nucleus Application rule sets. In addition, NuReport and NuQL natively support the newly emerging standards embedded within powerful non-normalized, 3 dimensional nested tables that have recently been offered by Oracle, IBM and other first tier database vendors.
Operational Framework:
The Nucleus environment incorporating NuReport, NuForm and MvFormGen offers end-users and developers an easily managed framework of interfaces and tools for reporting, form management and form design, so that extensive coding is rarely necessary. Developers are able to assemble enterprise-level reporting through natural language based interfaces, in a fraction of the time that hand coding would require.
Business analysts are able to quickly specify what will appear in a report. Developers can focus their efforts on more difficult project components, such as business logic and operational rules. The consistent framework found in NuReport and NuForm components simplifies modification and maintenance efforts, thereby reducing the costs of application support.
NuForm Reporter
The Customer Sales Analysis shown below was printed using NuForm Reporter, without requiring PC based tools, print drivers or complex "client-side" applications.
DATA may also be printed on Invoices, Purchase Orders, Bills of Lading, etc., with the NuForm Reporter.
This simple notation produced the laser-printed report above.

With NuForm Reporter, presentation quality, laser printed reports and data forms can be quickly created and rapidly deployed.
Lengthy programming sessions previously necessary to create new reports become a thing of the past.
Security:
Comprehensive security profiles can control access to sensitive data. The ability to design, modify or print reports using NuReport can be easily secured or restricted. Restrictions may be placed on each printer in an organization only allowing use by members of authorized workgroups or specifically authorized individuals, preventing the unauthorized use of check printers. Access to files can be restricted, preventing security breaches such as the unauthorized printing of customer lists, credit cards, payroll or other sensitive information.
Permissions and privileges can be assigned according to security work-groups, increasing control while reducing management effort. Special privileges may be granted to individual users or groups. Restrictions may be placed on individual users where necessary.
Any report, printer, device or field on a report can be placed under system security enabling hiding of fields and restricting or denying access based on security profiles of individual users.
Query statistics can be output to a security log. The security log can be reviewed to analyze report activities during any timeframe as required.
Simplify management of laser printers - MvLaser:
MvLaser an integral part of the Binary Star family, provides a high-level series of API's or subroutines that can be embedded in BASIC programs where one passes arguments as: CALL LZRX.FONT("UV12B"). This command would set the font to Universe 12 point Bold. There are more than 85 commands in the MvLaser set that greatly simplify the management of laser printers, totally eliminating tedious hand coding of PCL5/PCL6 escape sequences.
MvLaser subroutines can be called from any BASIC program to draw lines and boxes, shade, area fill, print bar codes (3 of 9, 128, postal bar codes, etc.), print multiple typefaces (in characters up to 8 inches tall) etc., with placement as tight as 1/720 of an inch.
Construct forms without programming - MvFormGen
MvFormGen, an extension of MvLaser allows the user or developer to construct a form without any programming or scripting languages. Using MvFormGen, every element of a form, including headings, labels, lines, boxes, fill areas can be entered in tables. From these tables, MvFormGen will automatically generate a subroutine using MvLaser routines, to print the form, without having to write a single line of code.
The print image generated can be retained in printer memory and recalled as a "macro", by sending only 8 bytes of data to the printer, eliminating sending the entire command sequence over the network every time a form is required - saving time and significantly reducing network traffic.
Never run out of custom forms again:
Custom forms, created with NuForm or MvFormGen, can be printed in offices anywhere in the world via the Internet, not only saving weeks of lead-time at the printer, but also saving on custom printing. Running out of forms becomes a thing of the past, as the only requirement beyond a laser printer is inexpensive, plain white paper that is available anywhere in the world at a moments notice, from your local neighborhood office supply store. Forms, for special or departmental projects no longer require budgetary approval, as your forms can be created internally without involving external vendors or special orders.
NuForm and MvFormGen enable the printing of DATA on either pre-printed forms or laser printed forms developed using MvLaser.
With Binary Star printing solutions, you can print DATA on Invoices, Purchase Orders, Bills of Lading, etc., using multiple fonts and sizes to get that professional "type-set" look.
Export Reports as HTML
NuReport allows reports to be exported as HTML web pages. This gives you the ability to exploit the benefits of browser-based displays such as unrestricted depth and extended width, graphic presentations, hypertext linking, report scrolling and more. Reports on the web can be accessed without "eating up" database connections, reducing infrastructure costs while ensuring the rapid distribution of information to customers, vendors, business partners and investors, through a secure login. Web based reports can be easily saved on a user's desktop and imported into a spreadsheet program for further analysis.
Export features within NuReport, simplify the publishing process by gathering all of the components needed to display the HTML report files and placing them in a directory structure that can be moved without modification to a web server.
PDF Documents (PDF)
NuReport allows a report to be saved and then incorporated into a PDF document, preserving the positioning of report entities such as graphics, sub-reports, headers and footers. This allows a report or document to be distributed without fear of modification and easily viewed or printed using a free copy of Adobe Acrobat reader, reducing infrastructure costs.
XML Documents (XML)
The Nucleus environment (of which NuReport and NuForm are part of) can easily import XML data forms into nested or distributed tables, as well being able to export non-normalized (three-dimensional) data as XML. Visit our Web-site at http://www.binarystar.com/XML_integration.html for additional information.
Other Export features:
Columnar reports created using NuReport can be exported and saved as Comma Separated (CSV), Tab Separated (TSV) or as a text file. Reports can be directly imported to an Excel spreadsheet.
Scheduling Capability
NuReport Reporter may soon be called from a scheduler. This feature can be used to automate the printing of reports, the publishing of HTML reports to a web server, and generating of RTF files.
Multiple users can login to create and securely view their own private reports, along with reports shared by others.
An unlimited number of custom report formats can be created and stored within NuReport. Reports can be exported for additional processing in other applications such as an Excel Spreadsheet, Crystal Reports, or printed directly to a printer, from within NuReport.
Each report can be based on a select set of records established via multiple queries against several database fields, each of which may be controlled by numerous query operators and logical comparison operators. The query criteria can also be displayed in the report.
Prerequisites: NuReport requires a single-user or multi-user version of Nucleus AE from Binary Star Development Corporation. The NuQL database manager must be installed. With NuQL enabled, reports can be created based on data contained within any external SQL / MySQL database.
